YOGA OF FIRE

Agni means « fire » in sanskrit. it is one of the most revered deity in the hymns of the Vedas, the most ancient scriptures of India. Central to many traditions, Fire is a part of the practices of Yoga, Tantra, Alchemy, Shamanism and Sufism.

The flame is very much like the fire of love burning inside each and every one ‘s heart. A mystical element that blends our opposite polarities, transforming our gross elements into more refined and delicate ones.

In certain paths it is awakened directly from the inside. In Hatha yoga it is awakened through posture, breath and concentration. In Bhakti Yoga it is awakened through devotional chanting. In some lineages of Sufism, it is awakened only by the presence of the teacher.

In other traditions like Alchemy or Vedic rituals, the external sacred fire is used as a way to relate to the inner light.
The rituals of the Vedas are called Yagyas or Homas. Based on the natural laws of the universe, they resonate with our inner self and can be a powerful catalyst of our transformation. The most basic and yet essential ritual coming from Ayurveda is called AGNI HOTRA.

Consciously relating to the qualities of the Sun at Sunrise & Sunset, through the flame and the smoke we saturate our surroundings with a very high quality prana.
This specific practice has been revived and actualized in the 20th century by a vedic master called Shree Gajanan Maharaj and largely spread by his disciple Shree Vasant .

Their motto was “ Heal the atmosphere and the environment will heal you”

It is practiced worldwide for:
– physical, mental and spiritual health.
– agriculture as “Homa farming” and contributes to align ourselves with the subtle energies of nature : the Devas, healing our relationship with the earth on a deep level.

The modern name for this movement is “Homa Therapy”.

BASIC HOMA

We make an offering of Rice, Pure Cow’s ghee and mantra to the fire exactly at the specific time of the first and last ray of the sun. The fire is made of Cow Dung and lit in a copper pyramid.

The dimension of the pyramid are based on sacred geometry, in vibratory resonance to expand the field of the fire.
Cow is a great teacher in the Vedas, she teaches us to stabilize our meditative mind and synchronize with the universe.
The pure ghee is giving clarity and sustenance to our thoughts and intentions. The unbroken whole grain of rice is our sankalpa, the seed of our intention.

By doing it exactly at sunrise and sunset we tap into the sattvic energy of total balance and meeting of the polarities and connect ourselves with the biorhythm of the cosmos. We align ourselves with the light of the creative energy of the sun.
The saints of this tradition said “Agnihotra leads to this state of TOTAL SURRENDER.”

Many scientific studies have been made and confirm that the atmosphere and smoke of Agni Hotra are beneficials for plants, animals and humans. In some places radioactivity disappeared. In others, crops were more fertile and showed more resilience. Many people cured from illnesses and got healthier thanks to the regular daily practice of this simple Homa.
It is particularly helpful for yogis who practice pranayam because the atmosphere is purified and saturated with high quality prana. The ashes are also very healing and nourishing, they can purify water. Added to ghee they make a wonderful treatment for wounds.

OTHER HOMAS

There are all kinds of Homas in the vast tradition of Sanatana Dharma. The rituals can be extremely precise and sophisticated. It is often related to the subtle movements of the planets and the Sanskrit mantras might be very long and complex. Yet we don’t need to be expert brahmins to relate to the sacred fire. Therefore, the purpose here is to present 2 Homa practices that are essentials and easily accessible. They can be used anytime and everywhere.

VYARHUTI Homa
It is the opening prayer for every other Homa as well as a complete Homa on its own when practiced alone. You can lit a fire in a your copper pyramid and offer a drop of ghee to the fire on each SWAHA of the mantra:

Bhuh swaha Agnaye idam na mama
Bhuwah swaha Wayave idam na mama
Swah swaha sooryaaya idam na mama
Bhuh Bhuwah swah swaha prajaapataye idam na mama

Practiced on its own it will open the way and bless the birth of new projects or intentions. It invokes the alignment of the different realms of your being governed by the fire (Agni), the wind (Vayu) and the sun (Soorya) to the cosmic order and flow. “Idam na mama” means ‘this is not mine.’ It is equivalent to “Not my will but thy will be done,” of the Bible.

You need to recite the mantra only once.

Then you can stay in silent meditation until the fire cease or start with your specific Homa.

TRYAMBAKAM Homa

Agnihotra establishes the basic cycle, Tryambakam Homa and the other healing fires will help to strengthen that cycle. This sacred fire is done with the Maha Mritunjaya mantra, an ancient sound from the Rig Veda.
You can lit a fire in a your copper pyramid and offer a drop of ghee to the fire on each SWAHA of the mantra:

Om Tryambakaï Yajamahe
Sugandhim Pushti Vardanam
Urvaarukamiva bandhanaat
Mrityormuksheeya maamritat Swaha

It is very healing. Calling on the energy of Shiva or dissolution it burns the blocks that stand on our way.
It is an alchemical mantra that has the power to transmute patterns, illnesses, attachments, bondage so we can realize and contemplate the full radiance of our soul. It is also a very beneficial mantra for plant life.To experience its depth, recite it at least 108 times. It can be recited at anytime for as long as you wish. For Homa farming it is recited 4 hours daily.

If one needs to conserve on cowdung, a minimal amount of it may be used, but some cowdung should be added at least every fifteen minutes.
